JAVIER PÉREZ

In 1992, he graduated in Fine Arts at the Universidad País Vasco in Bilbao and, in 1993, earned a Master of Arts at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. The artist uses various materials such as leather, horsehair, latex, resins, glass, bronze, and porcelain as well as everyday objects. The artist’s favorite subjects for addressing the impermanence and cyclic nature of life are the body and time. Works such as Tempus fugit (2002) or Mutaciones (2004), a mixed-media installation exhibited at the Palacio de Cristal in Madrid, emphasize the inexorable passage of time and the inevitable traces that it leaves on the body from a biological but, above all, from an existential point of view. He is fascinated by the color red-and the poetics implicit to it-and has used it as the protagonist in many of his projects: Capillares II (2002), Olivo (2004), Máscara de seducción (2008), and Carroña (2011) are just a few examples. Some of the artist’s works are in the collections of Marseille’s CIRVA and the Fondation Guerlain and have been exhibited at the Museo Nacional Centro Reina Sofia (2004), Madrid; the Guggenheim Museum (2008), Bilbao; the Galerie Guy Bärtschi (2010), Geneva; Claudine Papillon Galerie (2010), Paris; in Glasstress (2011, 2013), Venice; the S12 Galleri Og Verksted (2013), Bergen; Mario Mauroner Contemporary Art (2016), Vienna; and at Glassfever (2016), Dordrecht. He won a grant from the DRAC (1995); the Ciutat de Palma Antoni Gelabert d’Arts Plastiques Award (2008), Palma de Mallorca; the Lázaro Galdiano Award (2009); and the Arcilla Award as best artist at FIG Bilbao (2014).
