BIOGRAPHY

The work of Jerónimo López Ramírez, better known as Dr Lakra, is characterized by creating irreverent and provocative images that transgress the established norms and take the viewer to the border between attraction and repulsion.

Through the different media he explores his interest in anthropology and ethnography, with which he documents his fascination with taboos, fetishes, myths and rituals of different cultures.  His compositions combine historical references and contemporary images, interspersed with religious iconographies and quotes from popular culture. The manner in which he juxtaposes these elements reveals a deep understanding of the history of art, as well as a subversive sense of humor. Dr Lakra dismantles and disturbs the dominant ideologies to question what is considered civilized or barbaric, right or wrong, “refined” or “popular” art. His studies of malformations of the human body come face to face with eroticism and sensuality that combine life, death and desire. This particular pieces of work are inspired by 1800 antique medical chromolithographs of anatomical subjects. Old Anatomy prints are certainly something that catches Dr Lakra’s attention, inspiring him to create this surrealist contemporary sculptures in glass giving to the viewer the sense of attraction and repulsion, Dr Lakra is all about.
